A winter storm is still on track to hit KELOLAND Sunday, creating blizzard conditions in western, central, and parts of eastern South Dakota.
Surrounding the blizzard warnings, are winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings. Anyway you look at it, snow and strong winds are very likely to reduce visibilities to near zero at times and temperatures will be much, much colder.
The heaviest snow will be in south central and central South Dakota from Chamberlain to Pierre. There will also be a band of 4-8” in northeast KELOLAND from just east of Aberdeen to Sisseton. Surrounding the 4-8” snows will be areas of 3-6”, then expect a sharp cutoff of snow totals in southeast KELOLAND. Also, parts of the Hills will receive 4-8” with some areas approaching a foot for the Hills. But the wind will make measuring snow very difficult.
The radars will continue to show widespread snow as we go through tonight and into tomorrow morning. The heaviest snow will start in south central KELOLAND tonight and move northeast as the night goes on.
As the storm system moves through Nebraska and into Iowa, snow will continue but strong north winds will also kick in. The winds will gust to 50 mph at times creating blowing and drifting snow along will visibilities near zero at times. These winds will continue through the day Sunday and will also usher in MUCH COLDER air from the north. Temperatures will not only drop during the day, but the wind will create wind chills of -20 to -30!
By Sunday evening, a lot of the snow will be done west of Interstate 29, but the snow will continue to fly east of the interstate.
Monday morning is looking dry but the cold air will be in place with many areas reporting temperatures below zero. Throw in winds of 15-30 mph in the morning and we’re looking at wind chills of -30 to -40!
