Ridiculous Sioux Falls Air Fares
Posted by: Jay Trobec - 11/04/2009 3:27 PM

Sioux Falls airport has embarked on a major redevelopment project. It includes a renovation of the terminal building, and improvements to the runway area. The project will make a great “first impression” on visitors who land in Sioux Falls for the first time.

Architect's rendering of renovations at Sioux Falls airport. (And a depiction of how many residents will use Sioux Falls airport if things don't change.)

To pay for the project, the airport authority intends to impose a $4.50 facility fee on airline tickets. That is certainly not a huge amount compared to the fees charged by other airports I have visited, especially when many (unlike Sioux Falls) have degraded to the condition of bus terminals. But as things are right now, I may never have to pay that fee – because prices set by the major airlines serving Sioux Falls have forced me to take my business to other airports.

Previously, I have written about the dramatic cost savings by driving to catch a flight in Omaha, because competition (mainly from Southwest) keeps air fares there very low.

Now, as I find myself needing to take a trip to Atlanta in January, I have realized that driving to ANY airport in the Midwest will result in better fares than those charged in Sioux Falls.

Here are the actual, lowest fares posted on the web for a round trip flight to Atlanta on Saturday, January 16, returning Wednesday, January 20. Flying on Saturday and Wednesday gives the airlines every benefit, because those are two of the cheapest days of the week on which to fly. Examining the numbers, I was not surprised that it is significantly more expensive to fly out of Sioux Falls than Omaha or Minneapolis. But I was amazed to find that it is much cheaper to fly to Atlanta on those dates by driving to airports in Sioux City, Fargo, or even Rapid City!

---Cheapest round trip fares (taxes and fees included) to Atlanta from six Midwest cities on Jan 16, 2010, returning Jan 20, 2010. Fares posted as of 10 AM on November 4, 2009:

                        Delta                            United

FSD                566.91                         568.00

OMA               358.59                         346.90

MSP                224.20                         245.40

SUX                459.80                         -

FAR                 360.40                         480.00

RAP                 320.40                         367.00

Out of curiosity, I checked the price by flying the route backwards, from Atlanta to Sioux Falls on those same dates. Delta charges $20 dollars less for that route. It seems like the only way to get affordable air fares out of Sioux Falls is by visiting one of the destinations Allegiant serves.

I am not a penny-pincher trying to squeeze a nickel. I am not opposed to paying extra money to use Sioux Falls airport. But when the additional cost to “fly local” is in the hundreds of dollars, I object and vote by packing my baggage in my car – and taking my travel business elsewhere.

I agree! I'm going to Houston in December and it's cheaper to fly out of PIERRE! I never thought that would happen. Plus, Pierre has free parking...you can't beat that.

I fly out of Sioux Falls all the time (liability reasons for not driving on company business) and I couldn't agreed with you more. I've rarely paid less than $500 for non-popular destinations yet the planes seem to constantly be full. It seems to me they do too good of a job limiting the number of flights in and out which allows them to price hike.

I also think there is an issue with their pricing because it costs more to fly to Chicago than any other city when you fly through Chicago. So more costs for them yet cheaper???

The only way to beat the system is to fly when they want you to. If you just need to be gone for a weekend, try United's e-fares which go cheap but only to certain destinations and Sat-Tues.

I hope Keloland does a story on this and shines a light on this business practice on which the local airport can have some influence.

Talk to anyone who's worked for an airline since the 80's and they'll tell you how much crapier the experience has been since the government deregulated the industry. Bankruptcy after bankruptcy, the 9/11 attacks, huge price fluctuations and now apparently, price hiking are all direct and collateral results of the lack of regulation.

As Ron Burgundy would say "It's science, look it up."

I also agree! This past May we planned a trip out to Washington, we found the best way to go was to drvie 3.5 hours to Omaha, NE. We live in Sioux Falls, the most obvious and convenient way would have been for us to get on a plane closer to home, it just wasnt smart spending when your budgeting for a trip. There was no competition between the gas money to get to Omaha and the elevated price of a ticket out of Sioux Falls.

We have kids in our family that we need to fly in/out 3 times a year and always have a heck of a time finding affordable tickets. Travel dates are dictated by school schedules so we don't even have an option to vary travel dates to find cheaper fares. I too have started looking at alternate airports and have found MSP, FAR and OMA are always at least $100.00 cheaper per ticket - it goes a long way toward gas money.

The Sioux Falls airport would see a lot more business if they would make their pricing more competitive.

The comments are accurate...........Sioux Falls is getting the short end of Airline Fare pricing.
Try to remember.......it's NOT a factor which is controlled by the local Aiport or it's Authority.
The airport works like a Shopping Mall....space is rented to Airlines who come in, set their schedules, set their fares and pay the rent.
The only "tool" available is recruitment of more airlines/more competition.....as well as putting more and more "butts in the seats" on flights out of Sioux Falls. The only factor which effects fares is competition. When you and I drive to Omaha to catch a flight, we decrease the competition in Sioux Falls and add to the problem here. Not a "pitch"....just an observation of the facts.

Sorry, but Alegiant prices aren't so great over the holidays. Be sure and check their $99* rate too. I'd rather fly them as it's direct from AZ but you need to add in your seat cost, boarding first cost, security costs, etc.

I wish more airlines would fly into Sioux Falls making it easier for my family to visit me and vice versa.
